Job Description:
Watchkeeping Engineers are responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and inspection of the Engine Room and auxiliary machinery aboard the vessel in the absence of a senior Engineer. In coordination with the Deck Watch Officer, a Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible for the continued safe passage of the vessel while at sea. The Watchkeeping Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer through the Second Engineer. In the event that a vessel is operating with two engineers, the Chief Engineer will determine the assignment of duties normally carried out by the Watchkeeping Engineer.
Watchkeeping
The Watchkeeping Engineer will keep watch as assigned by Second Engineer and during this watch, operate the main engine and auxiliary machinery in accordance with all manufactures operating procedures. While on watch or on the alarms during UMS operations, the Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible to monitor temperatures, pressures and tank levels for all systems associated with operational equipment. Adjustments and transfers are to be completed to maintain operational parameters. The Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible that the Second Engineer is advised of any defect or unusual occurrence on his watch. Any changes necessary to the state of the machinery operating conditions are to be reported. The Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible for the activities of the E.R.A./oiler assigned to his watch and is to ensure that the E.R.A. performs his cleaning station tasks. The Watchkeeping Engineer is also responsible for responding to 1hour notice calls and preparing the vessel for departure in coordination with the Watchkeeping Officer on the bridge. This includes the testing of steering and pitch systems, securing the ER for sea and starting machinery under the direction of the Chief Engineer.
Routine Maintenance Duties
The Watchkeeping Engineer is to ensure the generator engines are maintained in good condition in accordance with the manufacturers maintenance schedule and instructions. The Watchkeeping Engineer will maintain the boiler plant and its auxiliary equipment in good condition and the seawater evaporation plant operation and maintenance. The Watchkeeping Engineer shall test the boiler daily, generator weekly and feed water and diesel engine cooling water daily and record the readings in the appropriate Chemical Supplier’s Log Sheets. Any abnormalities should be immediately reported to the Chief Engineer. The Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, operation and the cleaning of the lube oil and fuel oil purifiers, bunkering/transfer operations (under the specific direction of the Chief Engineer) and the seawater evaporation plant operation and maintenance, compressors, and all pumps. The Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible for the testing of machinery alarms and shutdowns. These tests shall be noted in the Engine Log Book.
Spares
The Watchkeeping Engineer is to maintain an inventory of all boiler, generator, automation and associated system spares. He is to review this inventory on a regular basis with the Second or Chief Engineer to ensure that the proper levels of spares are maintained.
Regular Duties

- Take Samples of cooling and boiler water and dose as required
- Top up Chemicals in Sewage System
Monthly
- Inventory Lube Oil and Chemicals
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Fourth Class Engineer or higher Certificate of Competency
2. STCW Basic Safety/Survival Craft
3. Ship Personnel with Designated Security Duties
4. Transport Canada Marine Medical
5. Marine Basic First Aid
6. Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Cargo Operations
Additional Requirements:
1. Experience in Arctic and remote area navigation is preferred
